Imperial Bricks in stock

We class 73mm or "taller" bricks as imperial.

Today's standard bricks - BS3921 are approx 65mmx 215mm x 102.5mm. Although some areas of the South of England refer to this size as "imperial" - this is more commonly known as a standard metric brick.

Page down to see some of the Imperials we stock.

Circa 1920 - in many parts of the UK - Imperial sized bricks were 73mm high , sometimes 75mm or even 80mm. Also- they tended to vary in size more than many bricks do today. They were often longer to. A common description of a tradition imperial (in inches ) is "3"" brick.

We stock 65mm, 73mm , 80mm and some reclaimed which can be 75mm - although every batch is a bit different (so we keep batches separate).

We've got smooth, sandfaced, rustic 73mm bricks. Use the "find"  feature above and try and search under descriptive words like "smooth" to see a specific type you may need.

Heather Red Sandfaced 73mm

Red Sandfaced 73mm x 215mm x 102.5mm (approx)

A medium to dark red sandfaced brick - with a texture a bit like "sandpaper". Pre 1985 this brick was made in two shades - a lighter version which was supplied mainly to the North of England and a darker version (like ths one ) which was targeted to the South.

Watch out for availability problems. Frogged.

Smooth Red Class B Engineering 73mm

73mm Smooth Red Class B

This is a medium to light red / orange smooth red Class B. Officially "Class B" bricks are only sold for their strength & water absorption properties & you can't be sure what the overall finish will be like. If you want a really good smooth red brick - consider using a "Smooth Red Facing Brick" instead of "just" a Class B that happens to have a smoothish red finish.

These are popular - beacause - although only sold as "Class Bs" - when you see them in our stockyard you will often see they have a better face & are more consistant than many other Class Bs. They are not a deep dark red - but are nearer a medium orange. Batches vary so inspect the stock. If you need a darker brick we can get them . We also have weathering chemicals that darken any brick.

Weathered Smooth Red 73mm

Weathered Effect Smooth Red

This brick is very useful for matching older properties - circa 1920 - 1965. In the 1st half of the 1900s many bricks were "pressed" and had a smooth red finish. Over the years - in many areas - they have become mottled because of the effects of pollution.

Although we supply a chemical called "brickmatch" / also known as "brick & stone weathering" which has a similar effect to this - these come "pre weathered".

They are an Extruded Wirecut brick. Oloder pressed bricks tended to have a more uneven "harrass" (edge) so this type may seem a bit "squarer" edged than a pressed brick.

NB Its approx 73mm x 215mm x 102.5mm (2 7/8" high - for us  "imperial" folk).

A few Brick Makers make similar bricks to these a call them include the term "City" or "Civic" as part of the name.

73mm " Red Black Spalyed "

"Pressed Facing Brick"

Made like bricks circa 1950 - this is a pressed brick with a very unusual texture. Some people say it looks "a bit like a pigeon has walked over the face of the brick".

As its pressed - the "harrasses" often seem more random than modern made bricks - so it has much of the classic "old fashioned" look of the mid 1900s.

Its a red bodied brick with a blacky - bluey "stain" on the face with makes it look very dark but usually allows some of the base red colour to show through.

73mm Weathered Red Wirecut

Fine Textiured "rustic"

A medium red brick with a randomish covering of an artificial weathering effect - to blend in with older properties.

73mm x 215mm x 102.5m approx. Useful for matching properties circa 1930-1960s .

Its a fine textured rustic - "with lines across the face" as many people say.

73MM Vertical Rustic

Vertical Rustic 73mm

A very unusual brick which is often used to match a classic "London" brick seen in the middle of the 1900s.

It has a "ribbed-like" finish - with the "ribbing" being vertical - almost straight down.

The clay is similar to a "fletton" clay - in appearance - .  If being used to match bricks circa 1930 + there's a good chance the original ones will be weathered. Using our weathering chemical on this brick can really produce some interesting results. NB We also have a match for the "Zig Zag" finish brick that seemingly became more popular than this one.

27

73mm Dark Red Sandfaced

Sandfinished Medium to Dark Red

Usually more uniform than our brick No 21 - this extruded (with holes) brick has a surface texture similar to "medium sandpaper" .Its a purple - to red colour - non through colour (the inside of the bricks usually a different colour).

Part of our imperial range - butwith dimensions of approx 73mmx 215mm x 102.5mm

23

"Multi Rustic Best 73mm"

Multi Red 73mm Wirecut

A good hard brick with a fine wirecut rustic finish "horizontal lines across the face". It tends to be a darksih brick - with a medium to dark red patch that varies. Very useful for matching some bricks seen in the 60s - often seen as the first few coarses (layers) of a property built around that time.

For other imperial bricks with a similar texture see also 530 & 641.

20

"Zig Zag Rustic "73mm

Rustic 73mm LBC

Made by Hanson London Brick Company - its a classic 60s brick with a very unusual texture which we describe as a "Zig Zag" because we think its more descrptive. We usually tend to supply this for matching properties circa 1950 and often ex Council Properties.

The original brick tended to pick up quite a lot of weathing so using our "Brick & Stone" weathering can be very useful to get a better match. If you're after a match for the very illusive "straight vertical" version of this brick - don't panic - look at our brick No 27!

Like many classic London Bricks - it's currently frogged ( - its got a "hollowed out" interior).

22

73mm "Pinkish" Red Sandfaced

Light Red/ Pink Sandfaced 73mm

With a texture a bit like medium sandpaper - this pinky red brick is a bit unusual - but very useful if you're looking for that "salmonish" coloured brick that's "not really red" and "not really orange".

It's an extruded brick (with holes inside)- approx 73mm x 215mm x 102.5mm

Pressed Reclaimed Bricks 3" / 75mm

Smooth Red Finish Reclaimed!

When we can get them - we aquire reclaimed pressed bricks with a smooth("ish") red finish.

If you've ever tried to drill into a wall and "had a bit of a rough time" so doing - you've probably encountered bricks like these. They're usually  tough , heavy, strong bricks! We keep each batch of reclaimed bricks separate and give them a different batch number. This is because - even if the bricks came from the same original factory - each batch will vary because of where it has been & how the weather may have effected it.

Its usually VERY worth while inspecting the packs. The bricks have usually been cleaned (with a brick hammer) by hand. There's a good chance they will have some chips on them from cleaning etc & they will vary more than modern made bricks.... but for an authentic old fashioned "classic" brick they can be great! (They often look a lot better walled together than in a pack).

To get a better idea what they will look like when used - give a few a wash as they often get dust on the surface from the cleaning process.

Unlike many modern made bricks - as well as being such sizes as 70mm , 73mm , 75mm , 80mm, 85mm ....they are usally longer (eg 9") AND wider (eg 4 & a half inches!). (Don't forget that - if you are ever sourcing Copers for a garden wall you may be building in them!).

We also stock reclaimed special shaped bricks (when we can get them).

804 + other batches!

Reclaimed Handmade Bricks 3" Approx

Reclaimed Handmade Bricks 3"ish

Handmade Reclaimed bricks are pre- used bricks that often date from the late 1800s to the early 1900s. When you see them in the packs - most people will usually love them or hate them. They often vary in every way possible.. but can "ooze" character.

A batch of 3" ones can sometimes contain bricks 2" high (but not often) - but inspect the packs!!!! We keep each batch separate and give it a different batch number. We aim to give them a description that gives you a good idea what they are really like.

For a reclaimed brick with a bit less variation - see our brick no 804.

Reclaimed special shaped bricks also available (when we can get them).

506+ other batches!

"80mm Weathered Pressed Smooth Red"

Imperial Smooth Red Weathered 80mm

This is one of the largest bricks around. It's actually NEW but most people wont think it looks new. They are "huge". Ie  approx 80mm x 230mm x 110mm ish.

Sorry - but they are one of the dearest bricks we stock - but very popular. They are pressed - so they have the authentic rougher harrass (edges) of bricks made circa 1930 & "boy there tough & heavy!".

73mm Buff "Light Golden Brown" Sandfaced

Buff Sandfaced finish 73mm

With a surface texture a bit like medium texture sandpaper - this light golden / buffish coloured brick is approx 73mmx 215mm x 102.5mm. If you want a more "salmon" brick see our no 120 - or if you want a darker golden brown - see our 25. (Some people might say this brick looks a bit like a very pale green colour).

Butterley Waingroves used to make a Golden Brown Sandfaced (also Marshalls) which was a bit similar in many ways to this bricks overall appearance. The unusual subtle shade makes it one of the hardest bricks to represent by photo.

562

73mm "Golden Brown Sandfaced"

Golden Brown Sandfaced 73mm Blend

Another "sandpaper- like" finished brick in an often useful golden brown colour. Like many of its predessesors in the 1960s its a golden brown surface colour over a redish brick body. Sometimes you can see bits of the original red showing through the surface colour.

We obtain blends of this brick- batches that vary so that we can often offer quite a degree of variation - often needed to match the similar bricks used in the 1960s. It's approx 73mm x 215mm x 102.5mm. A brick where it's usually worth inspecting the packs in our stockyard.

For a lighter - more uniform similar brick - see our 562 - but note thats "about 3 shades lighter".

25

73mm Smooth Blue

Blue Engineering Bricks 73mm

This is similar to the type of bricks often seen on older British Rail Bridges. VERY tough strong hard bricks. Some of the older versions of this brick can be a bit darker - but our weathering chemicals can often make up the difference.  Most commonly seen as the splash coarses , (coarses at the bottom of a property)- often used up to and just above DPC.( "The Damp Coarse Layer").

This colour of brick is often available is many special shapes as they are FL (frost resistant) and have a multitude of uses.

73mm Grey Sandfaced

73mm "Grey Sandfaced"

If you are trying to match the old Butterley Derbyshire Grey (ex Waingrove circa 1960+) or the Marshalls Charcoal Grey Sandfaced - this brick might be worth considering. Its a pretty rare brick in a medium grey finish with a "sandpaper" like texture. (Its a bit rougher than the Derbyshire Grey was but its got everything else going for it).

Like the Derbyshire Grey etc ( seen alot in the Ripley/ Matlock area) its a red bodied brick (red inside) which sometimes can be seen a little bit behind the grey. Its currently an extruded brick (with holes).

73MM Buff Wirecut Rustic

Light Buff Wirecut 73mm

A few Brick Manufacturers have made buff wirecut 73mm bricks over the years but VERY FEW still do. Some of the classic buffs you may be trying to match include :- Innes Lee / Crawel bricks , Kirton Minster Grey/ Natural & even more recent ones like the Ibstock Leicester Beacon Sahara Multi - to name but a few.

We try and keep in at least one buff wirecut in 73mm but they are getting hard to source. Often a light brick like this will pick up the weather- so don't forget to check out our brick & stone weathering chemical. This brick has a fine wirecut texture ("Like horizontal lines across the face"). If you are looking for a rougher buff rustic (to match something like the old Askern Asgold - popular  in the Doncaster area) - we may well be able to help you if you contact us.
