Handmade Bricks

Handmade & Simulated Handmades - "bricks of character".

Handmade bricks usually vary more in colour & texture than machine made bricks. They also often have more of a matt finish than some machine made bricks.

Page down to see a selection of some we stock or use the "find" feature above for a more specific search.

You normally expect to pay more for this type of brick - seemingly more popular in the South of England where the slight extra cost is not so significant re the overall property price as in the North.

Very popluar for brick fireplaces. It only takes around 100 to build a small fireplace surround.

We often have some great deals on "cheap" handmades so it can be worth asking us "what have you got cheap that looks like...."

"Oldie- Worldie" Handmade 65mm

"Oldie-Worldie Effect" Handmade 65mm

This brick looks really old fashioned and is ideal if you are looking for a brick of character that varies in shape , texture and colour. With deep creases in the face - we've used it on projects for Listed Buildings - "English Hertitage" properties & to help countless customers create character fireplaces. (It's also an interesting choice for new properties). Its also available in the smaller 50mm x 215mm x 102.5mm (approx).

Dutch Handmade ("Oldie Worldie" 65mm

Dutch Handmade 65mm

This brick - from Holland - tends to be slightly more uniform than our brick No 110 - but gives a nice old fashioned feel to a property or feature project. The Dutch have a great deal of experience making Handmade ( & simulated) Handmades . Have a look at some of the beautiful handmades in Amsterdam - especially if you ever get the chance to travel round the Cannals on a boat trip (Ok so some of us can't even resist looking at bricks when we are on Holiday! ).

Having taken a few packs to bits personally for a customer once - to examine the mixture for his huge private house project - we observed that there seemed to a nice even mixture of very dark bricks , medium coloured and more red bricks.

There have been some good prices from our friendly brick factory rep too over the years - so worth considering for a new building project (as well as a fireplace).

Antique Briquettes

Antique Briquettes approx 146mm x 70mm x 36mm

These "very small" bricks are the type you see in old fireplaces. NOTE THE VERY SMALL DIMENSIONS. Although we can also supply them in standard brick size (uk)  we supply & stock this "briquette" size for fireplaces. (We understand one customer used them to build a bridge for a small model railway layout in his garden - it seemed a good idea!) We also have a large range of special shaped bricks in this type - just what you need if you want to build an old traditional fireplace. They are a deep, dark red with occasional "antique" effect on the face - a bit like greyish sand. Nice bricks & quite rare these days. You've possibly seen something like them in some old pubs!

Deep Red to Purple Handmade 65mm

Deep Red to Purple Handmade 65mm

This deep handmade ( which would look lighter if you used a more typical mortar colour) has been very popular and we are pleased that the suppliers have helped us to get some really good prices for people building new properties. The clay is very good ( to use the technical term FL  - BS3921 Table 3 , Designation of Durability) and it normally has a frog). The same range includes lighter reds & some buffs.

"London Stock" 65mm

"London Stock " 65mm

Yellow or cream bricks (handmade looking - but without the "smile" ) are , in the brick world , often given the term a "London Stock". A few Manufacturers have made some classics - including Blue Circle - & they tend to be seen in the (you guessed ! ) London area as well as certain areas in the South of England. The one shown here is a Dutch-made brick where they seemed to have produced quite an authentic yellowish buff with a really varied blue to black hearting (or "gesintering" as the Dutch call it). They can be Expensive - so be careful!

Red Handmade with a Traditional "Smile" Texture 50mm

Also Available in 65mm

This real handmade brick is stocked by us in 50mm x 215mm x 102.5mm (approx) but we can also supply it in the 65mm size.  Its a medium red handmade with a tight very slightly sandy surface finish (but not particularly dusty) with a "smile" texture finish. A nice traditional attractive red handmade.

Multi Coloured Red Handmade 65mm

Multi Coloured Red Handmade 65mm

Some people believe that a multi coloured brick will tend to blend with its surroundings faster than a plain brick - because whereas a plain brick can sometimes tend to "stand out" - a multi can sometimes look as if the colour variation comes from weathering and therefore the new property may look more natural and "weathered in" . You may or may not agree. This brick is a multi. It's got a "smile like" texture - which at times tends to be a crease more than a "carved" smile , is essentially a medium red with grey or greenish darker patches which can sometimes be almost cigar shaped.  It is a machine thrown simulated handmade.

"Slop Mold" / "Soft Mud Clay" brick 65mm

"Slop Mold" Red Multi 65mm

Characteristics of this brick include harrasses (edges) that tended to not be perfectly  straight , slightly curved at times with a bit of a lip. It is a through coloured orange to light red bodied brick with occasional blue ish darker patches. It has been used very effectively in some instances where an old fashioned effect is needed. It is currently solid.

"Gold Handmade " 50mm

"Gold Handmade" 50mm

A goldish "richly" coloured genuine handmade brick with a fairly indented "smile"- like texture. Often referred to as an attractive alternative to a red brick . It can look particularly effective in a fireplace - particularly if used with a Traditional Brown Quarry tile. Focusing subtle lights on the bricks can also produce an attractive feature so as to bring out the subtle colours of the  fine tightly knit sand on the surface of the brick. Also available in the UK traditional 65mm size.
