Metric Brown & Grey Bricks

Page down to see some of the Brown & Grey  65mm Bricks we stock.

Sometimes the classification of a brick as brown rather than buff can be a matter of opinion - so if you can't find what you are looking for here - it might be worth checking out some of the other sections.

We have aimed to provide descriptive reviews of the bricks based on our observations of the bricks first hand. This means that you can use our "find" facility to look for bricks with characteristics you may have noticed & not worry about using technical terms. For example - you might have noticed "sand" on the face or "dimples" or "blue" patches. Searching for basic things you've noticed just might help you to find what you are looking for.

Chocolate Brown Dimpled 65mm

Chocolate Brown Dimpled 65mm

This brick has "dimples" in the face - like someone has pushed their thumb in the unfired clay several times. Its a very dark brown colour (yours might look lighter if you've used a lighter mortar - it does make a difference). It is frogged (got a hollowed out interior) and the inside of the brick tends to be a lighter colour than the outside - so if it gets chipped you may see the lighter colour showing through. There is also a red version (our brick No 512) and a grey version (brick No 59).

(Light) Brown Wirecut Rustic 65mm

Brown Rustic 65mm

This is a light brown (almost beige) brick with a very fine wirecut rustic texture (like lines cut across the face from left to right). It normally has three holes. In the 1970s there was a lighter version called natural. In the 1980s the brick was sometimes made with a reddish base clay which made the brick darker and at other times with an almost creamish base clay that made the brick look lighter. It often has slightly rounded edges along the 65mm dimension.

Grey Multi Dimpled 65mm

Grey Multi Dimpled 65mm

This brick - which some may say looks a little like stone when walled - has a grey multi shaded background colour on the face and dimples - like someone has pushed their thumb into the surface . Its made from OXFORD CLAY - which has tended to produce quite a degree of variation over the years. The darker patches tend to be made up of dark , blackish patches over a dull greenish main area.

There is also a red and dark brown "version" of this texture - search on this site for "dimpled". A yellow one is also available.

Grey Wirecut Fine Textured Rustic 65mm

Grey Wirecut Rustic 65mm

This grey rustic has a very fine wirecut rustic texture (like lines cut into the brick from left to right). There used to be a cream and a medium grey version made at the same factory - phased out around 1980ish. In reality, the other two versions tended to weather to look alot like this one - which is quite handy when you come to matching. There used to be a brickworks at Belton (prior to the Belton factory built there around 1980 - which made different looking bricks ) which made a large range of similar bricks. They tended to vary alot in colour & produced quite a range of multis. If your brick could be one of these - you may wish to consider mixing some of the other bricks we have from the same factory as this with the same or very similar texture. For a red - see our 303, for a buff - see304 & for a light brown - see No 3.

Consideration needs to be given to the stress effects of mixing bricks - & many people would say that it may be wise to avoid mixing bricks with very different crushing strengths. Always take advise if unsure.

Silver Grey Sandfaced 65mm

"Silver" Grey Sandfaced 65mm

This frogged brick - made from OXFORD CLAY - was very popular in the 1960s. Many large estates have properties built in this.  It has a sandfaced finish ( a bit like medium sandpaper) If you have the imperial version - we have problems matching it. But we do have a 73mm grey sandfaced (see our No 26). The original brick tended to weather darker so No 26 may be worth considering if you need imperial. Other characteristics of this brick include colour variation , occasional little back spots (dots) and occasional yellowing - (but not usually that much). You may also some little (what looks like) "small bluish crystals" - on the face.

Chocolate Brown Dragface Multi 65mm

Brown Dragface Multi 65mm

This is a hard very dark brown brick - with a dragface finish ( like little squarish holes in the surface). This particular one often has some lighter or darker ones in the mixture. If your brick is plainer - don't worry - we should be able to help - just tell us.

This type of brick is often seen as the first few coarses (layers) around the bottom of a building. ( A bit like an alternative to traditional blue bricks). (Called a splash coarse - they don't show the dirt caused by being at ground level ). Also seen around windows as a feature etc.

Concrete Brushed "Purple" 65mm

Concrete "Purple" brick 65mm

This brick is concrete, solid , with a "brushed" finish . Note that some of the headers (ends) are often smooth! (Like in our picture - top left). They naturally feel like concrete - usually quite heavy . Some people say the surface is a little like stone. Often referred to as a "heather" colour. The brick & the factory that makes it has changed its name.
